Testing the units

Testing the units

As we said in our last post, we ran the first 24 Terra boards -- here's quick clip of the first one going into assembly: Since then things have been moving at a quick clip here, and we are in the thick of final adjustments on the Terra before going into production.  We have at least half a dozen Terras in the field streaming live audio.  The rest will go outside next week, and we'll have a good sample to look for any failure points or issues.   Scott and Mike working with designer John to adjust the case model.  We've made some tweaks to the case to make it easier to assemble quickly, and we've also adjusted the windscreen to...
The first Terra!

The first Terra!

It's been almost 3 years since Terra began, and we've finally produced one.  We got our first 20 Terra PCB boards for testing, as well as all the parts we needed.  We ran them all through our giant easy bake oven, and out came a complete Terra. Next step is to test the board and then run 20 more, which will go into the 20 enclosures we received.  Those all get tested for a couple of weeks, and then we start making Terras.  Here's Mike with the finished board... And Scott thinking of all the birds we'll identify! Needless to say we're thrilled to be at this point, and it means we're getting very close to fulfilling your orders as...
Terra Tuesday: Windscreens ahoy!

Terra Tuesday: Windscreens ahoy!

We've been working on getting together all the parts and accessories for shipping, and it's all coming together. Two big rolls of material are going to a sewing contractor to make 4000 windscreens (!) that will go into each end of the devices. We also are expecting a small but very heavy shipment of magnets, which will connect the Terra to it's support without compromising the integrity of the housing. Last but not least, the final enclosures are being worked up, and we can't wait to put it all together!
Terra Tuesday: Motus tags to the cloud!

Terra Tuesday: Motus tags to the cloud!

Casey again with Tuesday's update! We are a bit delayed getting this out due to a Kickstarter technical issue regarding update posting. Above is the 434MHz helix antenna that we are using to receive Motus tags on the Terra. This is the standard antenna that will ship which each unit, unless you requested one with an external antenna. This antenna, while looking small, is actually quite powerful. Our range tests show a 500 meter radius within a neighborhood with some trees and houses. This means that Terra can pick up tags from all of your neighbor's bird feeders, including your own, depending on your specific environment!  As a stress test, we are running this receiver at CTT headquarters. There are...
Terra Tuesday: Collecting data from butterfly tags!

Terra Tuesday: Collecting data from butterfly tags!

It's Casey again, with another Terra Tuesday update. Yes, I know its Wednesday, but I wanted to wait another day so I could show you something cool. We have successfully collected 1 million pings from various Blu Morpho tags (the ones that are used on Monarch Butterfies) over the past 13 days!  But sadly, there are no actual butterflies. Just lots of test Blu Morpho tags either being tested by engineers, or waiting to be delivered to many different customers around the world.   The above test is the equivalent of 2,000 Terras receiving 500 tag beeps each in that 2 week period, which would be considered an extreme amount of activity.  To those keen observers seeing the day and...
Terra Tuesday: Windscreen

Terra Tuesday: Windscreen

It's time for another Terra Tuesday update! This past week, the custom sewn windscreen assembly has arrived. This is the final sample of the windscreen, which on approval, will kick off it's mass production. This will be one of the several techniques used to reduce unwanted wind noise when listening to Terra.  This material will go under the grid end of the Terra, as you see in this close up picture. Note, that as I mentioned last update, that weird gap next to the grate will go away in the next case revision. They are making tweaks to the die currently. Overall, we found the fit to be perfect. We are now testing the wind reduction properties to see if...
Terra Tuesday: Our plastic enclosure is here!

Terra Tuesday: Our plastic enclosure is here!

This week, our final prototype plastic enclosure for Terra showed up! These are some of the first samples of our injection molded case, which is under review for any final fit and finish issues. When we give them the thumbs up, the factory goes quick to work, cranking out thousands of these. However, as you will see shortly, it is good we only have a couple. Let's take the first look at what your Terra will look like -- mostly. In order to identify shrinkage and other artifacts, a glossy black was used for our prototypes. The plastic used during mass production will be a forest green color. Scott Whittle is testing out the mating of the two pieces for...
