The Terra Live Map Just Got a Major Refresh

A completely redesigned experience for exploring the Terra network.

The Terra Live Map has been rebuilt from the ground up with a brand new look, new features, and a mobile-first design that works beautifully on any device.

A Fresh, Modern Design

The first thing you'll notice is the new dark interface — it's clean, immersive, and puts your stations and wildlife data front and center. Panels and search results blend into the map so nothing gets in the way of what you're exploring. Whether you're checking on your backyard station or browsing detections across the network, it just feels better.

Species Filtering on the Live Feed

Watching real-time bird detections flood in across the map is fun to look at, but not always practical. Now you can filter them. Search for a specific species, tap it, and the live feed narrows to only show detections for that bird across the entire network. A filter card appears at the top of the map so you always know what you're watching for — tap it to clear the filter.

It's a powerful way to track a particular species during migration season, or just to see where your favorite bird is being heard right now.

Station Details at a Glance

Tap any station on the map and a detail panel slides up from the bottom. You'll see:

  • Live weather — Current conditions, temperature, and wind direction
  • 48-hour wind forecast — Scroll horizontally to see hourly wind direction across the full 48-hour period, so you can anticipate migration activity
  • Recent bird IDs — The latest species detected at that station with images and timestamps
  • Yard list — A complete inventory of every species ever detected, sortable by most seen, first seen, or newest additions
  • Radio tag count — How many tagged animals have been detected at that station

Wildlife Radio Tag Tracking

Radio-tagged birds, bats, and butterflies now have their own layer on the map. Tap a tag marker to see the animal's migration path drawn across the map with directional arrows showing which way it traveled.

Even better — there's a new timeline player that lets you animate the journey. Hit play and watch the animal's path unfold over time, or scrub through the timeline manually. You'll see the species name, tag technology (434MHz Motus or 2.4GHz Blu Series), deployment date, last detection, and total distance traveled.

We're also working on deeper data integration so that tag information flows back into Terra — letting you learn more about the individual animal behind the radio tag, including who deployed it and what research project it's part of. For sensitive species, Terra Listens may need to keep certain details private to protect the animal, so in those cases you'll just see the radio tag ID.

Smart Search & Filtering

The new search bar lets you find any of the 6,500+ species in the BirdNET database. Results are ranked intelligently — species with photos are prioritized, and matches at the start of a name score higher than partial matches. Once you select a species, a filter card appears at the top of the map so you always know what you're filtering by. Tap the card to remove it.

Layer Controls

A new layers panel lets you toggle exactly what you want to see on the map:

  • Terra Stations — Green when online, white when offline
  • Motus Towers — The broader Motus wildlife tracking network
  • Wildlife Tags — Radio-tagged animal positions, filterable by this year or all time
  • Bird ID Popups — Toggle the live detection bubbles
  • Day/Night Overlay — See the current terminator line across the globe

Clustering can be toggled independently for stations and tags, and your preferences are saved between visits.

Works Great on Your Phone

The entire map now works beautifully on your phone or tablet. Search for species, browse stations, check weather, and explore wildlife tags — all with easy tap and swipe gestures. Whether you're on the couch or out in the field, the map fits right in your pocket.
