Our Story

In late 2019, Scott, Mike and Casey got together to fulfill the dream of using sound to monitor wildlife onto a global scale. Their timing seemed terrible, since they started just as the pandemic struck. But a successful Kickstarter taught them that their greatest asset is community, and that was something people really needed during those years. It took four years of design, trials, fundraising and manufacturing to get to the finish line, but in late 2024 they shipped over 2000 Terra Stations: crowd-sourced bioacoustic monitors that connect people to local wildlife while building a brand new tool for global conservation.
As Terra grows, so does our community of nature lovers and the nature curious, and the power of those supporters is reflected in the millions of data points we’re collecting to help save the wildlife we love. Each bird or animal that we save through Terra is a victory for our community, empowering us to take concrete action in reversing the damage our planet has sustained in the past centuries, and restoring both the wild world and ourselves to a healthy state of abundance.

Terra and CTT

Cellular Tracking Technologies, or CTT, was founded by Mike Lanzone and Casey Halverson in 2009. In response to the needs of a wind-power company to survey Golden Eagles, they used old cell-phone parts to build the world’s first cellular-based wildlife tracker. That auspicious beginning has led to years of innovation and growth, and CTT now employs more than 40 people and has supported thousands of research projects on all seven continents, ranging from studies on Penguins in Antartica to the re-release of the California Condor into the wild.

CTT is part-owner of Terra, and provides contract manufacturing and business services to Terra, enabling Terra to do everything from design to procurement to manufacture to distribution. Headquartered in Cape May, NJ, one of the birding capitols of the world, CTT has become a leader in the growing tech economy that blends socially and environmentally conscious business with solid contributions to jobs and financial growth in their community.
Our Team
Coauthor of the Warbler Guide and App, Scott Whittle has moved from educator and author to startup president, and is excited at the idea of making technology that will bring people closer to nature while helping nature thrive alongside people. He is passionate about Terra’s almost unlimited potential to build a conservation community.
Mike Lanzone is the co-founder and CEO of CTT, a leading manufacturer and innovator of wildlife trackers. His life-long dedication to birds and wildlife have led to conservation and research projects all over the globe. His vision for the role of technology in conservation is inspiring, and he sees the power of Terra’s network as a game-changing tool for environmental research.
Casey Halverson is the COO and co-founder of CTT. Using his software, electronics, and radio skill set, he helped develop the original line of wildlife tracking devices for CTT. His focus now is managing the company’s operations as well as evolving the company’s product line. He is deeply involved and excited about building out the features and capabilities of Terra.
